Overall job purpose:

Reporting to the Director, Political Engagement, the Advisor is a significant contributor in the execution of strategic political engagement plans and key policy initiatives aligned with CMA’s mission and objectives, including those that are susceptible of influencing key players at the federal, provincial and municipal levels. The position also extends the monitoring and response capabilities of the department to regulatory and legislative developments.

Key responsibilities:

  • Builds profiles on Cabinet ministers and key parliamentarians
  • Monitors and attends relevant federal/provincial parliamentary committees proceedings as appropriate and provides updates to the team; proposes solutions and makes recommendations
  • Identifies and monitors relevant legislative developments at the federal, provincial and municipal levels and provides updates to the team; proposes solutions and makes recommendations
  • Develops and maintains relationships with MP’s & Senators as well as bureaucratic/political staff to Members of Parliament and Senators, including Minister’s offices and central agencies
  • Supports the team in advancing CMA’s policy positions with parliamentary committees by setting up meetings with committee members
  • Develops submissions for the association in response to parliamentary committee proceedings, regulatory developments and consultations of health matters and issues pertaining to physician practice such as tax and pension measures
  • Develops briefing notes, issue sheets, Q’s and A’s, talking points and backgrounders related to legislative and regulatory developments and government consultations
  • Monitors Canada Gazette and government websites to identify and report relevant regulatory updates and consultation notices to the team
  • Provides daily updates on hot advocacy/political/public engagement issues
  • Provides support for other political engagement related duties

Other skills required for this position:

  • Superior communications skills, both oral and written
  • English required, French considered an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other computer programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe is essential
  • Tact and diplomacy, empathy, a high level of discretion and sound judgement in making decisions that may significantly impact the credibility of the CMA
  • A high degree of resourcefulness, self-motivation and direction as well as the judgement necessary to understand when to seek direction and the ability to both multi-task and prioritize
  • Working knowledge of all CMA programs and initiatives be maintained
  • Effectively communicate the political actions, policies and strategic thinking of the CMA
  • Evening, weekend, and some travel to meetings, conferences and workshops may be required


  • University degree


  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
