CMA Board Highlights — December 2018

The CMA Board of Directors met December 7-8 to discuss a variety of issues. Please click here to find out more.

CMA Advocacy in Response to Ontario Government Move to Reinstate Sick Notes

This fall, the new government in Ontario introduced legislation that proposed to reinstate the ability of employers to require sick notes for short leaves. This legislation was fast-tracked and passed in late November. However, until this recent change, Ontario was the only jurisdiction to ban the ability of employers to require sick notes, a change that was welcomed by many physicians.

Both the CMA and OMA submitted formal responses during the legislative study of the bill. CMA staff reached out to OMA at the outset of this advocacy initiative and worked in tandem with them.

In addition to direct political action, the CMA commissioned public polling by Ipsos and launched a grassroots letter-writing platform to facilitate both physician and public engagement in Ontario. The polling revealed a low level of public support as well as concerning patient and health sector impacts of sick notes. The CMA’s statement and polling was picked up by media across the country.

MD and the PTMAs: Same Trusted Relationship

Some member-facing staff at PTMAs have been looking for guidance on what to say to their members about the recent sale of MD Financial Management to Scotiabank. This reference document has been shared with all Alliance members, and we want to be sure that all PTMA staff have access to a copy as well. We believe the relationships between MD, Canada’s physicians and our PTMA partners are sacred, and protecting these relationships is MD’s and Scotiabank’s top priority.

MD Financial Management launches Momentum Campaign

On November 12, MD launched its Momentum Campaign, which helps Canadian physicians make the most out of RRSPs and TFSAs. The campaign runs from October 2018 to February 2019 and raises awareness of the tax-advantaged benefits available through registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs). To help physicians understand how they can fully capitalize on RRSPs and TFSAs, case studies, videos, quick tips, and more will be made available on md.ca throughout the campaign.
