CMA-MP Roundtables on seniors care in the new Health Accord

As you may have read in July’s PTMA Newsletter, and further to CMA’s message sent to PTMA CEOs in June, CMA has embarked on another iteration of its successful public roundtables co-hosted with federal MPs. So far we have held events in Orléans (ON), Vernon (BC) and Victoria (BC). We will let you know when an event is being planned in your province/territory. Please contact for more info.

Federal proposal affecting incorporation

The CMA continues to be highly active in response to the federal proposal to alter access to the small business deduction. Finance Canada has confirmed that incorporated physicians in partnership group medical structures will be affected. The CMA is proactively meeting with elected officials and political staff to raise awareness of the risks of this proposal and to advocate for group medical structures to be exempted.

Finance Canada is currently consulting on the draft legislation that will implement this measure. Following the close of this consultation, legislation will be tabled in the House of Commons. The CMA is facilitating member engagement in the consultation and has been copied on over 800 submissions to date. Members can voice their concerns with this proposal using this online tool.

Finally, the CMA encourages each PTMA to submit a formal response (a template is available) to ensure the provincial/territorial perspective is fully understood.

Demand a Plan

Upcoming Ottawa Health Summit – A New Health Accord for All Canadians

Taking place in partnership with Canada2020 on September 28-29, 2016 this event will provide national stakeholders the opportunity to discuss and draw attention to needed changes in our health care system, in the context of an aging and evolving population. The event will be interactive and at the forefront of technology. It will be an event to remember, not only for its intelligence gathering and the quality of its speakers, but also for including many views and fostering dialogue and agreement for a better health care system in Canada.

Council of the Federation in Whitehorse

Canada’s provincial and territorial premiers met in Whitehorse, YK from July 20-22 at the Council of the Federation annual meeting. A delegation from the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) was there to meet with premiers and co-host two parallel events. The first was a roundtable discussion on seniors care and the upcoming Health Accord (read more here).

The second event was held in partnership with the Yukon Medical Association, the Canadian Pharmacists Association and the Mental Health Commission of Canada. This was an invitation-only reception to the Premiers, their staff, YMA physicians and local and national stakeholders. Amongst the nearly 80 attendees of the event included nine YMA members, Premier Kathleen Wynne of Ontario, the Yukon Minister of Health, senior government officials and various stakeholders.

Investing Responsibly With MD Fossil Fuel Free FundsTM

Investing in fossil-fuel-free funds is a choice that resonates with many Canadian Medical Association (CMA) members. At the 2015 CMA General Council, CMA members asked MD Financial Management (MD) to investigate investment opportunities in renewable energy. At this year’s meeting, MD was happy to announce a powerful new way for members to align their investments with their values, with the launch of the MD Fossil Fuel Free FundsTM.

With these funds, it’s possible for members to have investments with a positive impact on both their future and the environment’s. Most fossil-fuel-free funds in Canada eliminate only those companies involved in extraction, but MD Fossil Fuel Free Funds go a step further by also avoiding companies involved in processing and transporting these fuels.

MD will be launching a number of marketing initiatives in October and November to help promote these new funds. The initiatives will include a an email campaign, paid media that includes elevator wraps in medical buildings, social media, and the release of a supporting white paper, infographic and Inside MD video. In the meantime, you can view the launch video that was revealed on August 22.
